Business Success Depends Upon: Knowledge, Skill and Attitude

Several years ago, a wise and accomplished business advisor made the following assertion that stuck in my mind. The advisor, who is a PhD and internationally recognized business consultant, made the statement revealed below on many occasions.

The assertion that he made repeatedly was that business success depends on: Knowledge, Skill and Attitude. He seemed to believe that all three aspects of success were equally weighted.

He said over and over that the three determining factors of success are:

  • Knowledge
  • Skill
  • Attitude

Seems like a generality doesn’t it?  Well, that’s because it is a generality.  But that fact does not mean that he was talking just to hear his voice.  He was making a point.

Here is what I think is so cool about his teaching.  We are constantly bombarded with suggestions and innuendo about what we need to do in order to be successful.

Information and sales pitches blur together, and don’t necessarily make sense for us.  There are so many view points, not to mention motives, that fundamental concepts can easily escape our attention.

So, I’m going to keep this post simple.

All you need to do is first determine what you want to get done and then acquire the knowledge, skill and attitude needed to accomplish your goals.  And then develop those three keys and put them into action.

The trick is that all three keys are important.  Knowledge alone will not get you there.  Skill alone will not get you there.  Attitude alone will not get you there.  You need knowledge and skill and attitude working together.

Three additional points of view that I should add:

First, in my opinion, your attitude is key.  With the “right” attitude, many obstacles can be overcome.  With the “wrong” attitude, even minor obstacles can be crippling.

Second, an important component of attitude is the credo of NEVER GIVE UP.  Actually, never, never, never give up, no matter what.  (Winston Churchill sort of attitude.)

Third, it’s alright to have an attitude that includes taking life as it comes.  You are in charge of your own life.  Period.

Summary:  Your probability of business success depends upon your knowledge, skill and attitude.  The Winners attitude includes the Never Give Up credo.
